Let’s finish the Northern Rivers Rail Trail
Finishing the Northern Rivers Rail Trail will connect our people, towns, and businesses, creating opportunities today and for generations.
But it won’t happen without community support – and that means you.
Let’s show the government our Northern Rivers Rail Trail matters to real locals, real families, real businesses.
It only takes 10 seconds.
“But I thought it was finished!”

No, it’s not. Two sections of the Northern Rivers Rail Trail are complete, and it is bringing people, pride and dollars into parts of our region.
But it isn’t even halfway finished. There is a big gap through Byron, Bangalow and Booyong, preventing our Northern Rivers communities from being fully connected and all of us enjoying the benefits.
With your help we can make the Government listen, take action and get it finished!
Finishing the missing section will link Murwillumbah to Casino, unlocking the huge potential of one connected, safe and accessible trail, for everyone.
Your support matters right now
After two decades of campaigning, 54kms of the trail is open and being enjoyed by thousands, from local communities and beyond.
Now, we want the Government to release funding to finish the missing 74kms through the Byron Shire and Lismore LGA, which will connect Murwillumbah in the north to Casino in the south.
Lismore City Council and Byron Shire Council put in a joint grant application in August 2024, for the $42m needed to finish the missing sections from Mullumbimby to Crabbes Creek, and Lismore to Bexhill. We are still waiting for an announcement, despite 15 other regional development projects being given the go-ahead in August 2025.
Most recently (February 2026) Byron Councilors voted to progress their section from Mullumbimby to Byron, which is great news!
Adding your voice to our campaign to Government will show the strong community support behind finishing the rail trail and how much it matters to our region.

Health and wellbeing
Stronger community connections
Tourism and regional growth
Safety and accessibility
Pride in our place
The Rail Trail has had a profound impact on our business. I still remember when the train would pass through our property at night, the carriages often empty – it was clear the line couldn’t continue that way. After the trains stopped, the tracks sat unused for years, and we could only hope they might one day serve the community again.
What has emerged since has exceeded anything we imagined. The Rail Trail has not only brought significant growth to our business, but it has also strengthened community connections and given our guests a new way to experience the region. Today, it is one of the key pillars of our business and it plays a central role in our strategic planning. We feel incredibly fortunate to be part of its story.
Meet the Northern Rivers Rail Trail Supporters

The Northern Rives Rail Trail Supporters are a passionate community group working to bring one of the region’s most exciting projects to life.
Formed in 2013, the not-for-profit association brings together local volunteers, community advocates, tourism leaders, local government representatives and industry experts who share a common vision: transforming the 132km of disused rail corridor between Murwillumbah and Casino into a world-class walking and cycling trail.
As the community arm supporting the NRRT, they help build momentum on the ground. Through community events, advocacy, conservation projects, fundraising and volunteering, they connect people who care deeply about the future of our region.
Donate to help them continue their great work.
