Closed Circuit Television (CCTV) on the Northern Rivers Rail Trail

The Northern Rivers Rail Trail (NRRT) is committed to promoting a safe and secure environment for all trail users, residents, businesses, and visitors. To support this commitment, a number of CCTV cameras are installed and operating at the trail head in Murwillumbah. These cameras are owned and managed by Tweed Shire Council and form part of Council’s broader community safety and crime prevention strategy.

CCTV cameras at the NRRT trail head operate 24 hours a day and record activity within their field of view. The primary purposes of these cameras are to:

  • Reduce crime and anti-social behaviour
  • Assist in detecting offences
  • Support the identification and prosecution of offenders
  • Enhance the safety and security of the community

All recorded data is securely stored by Tweed Shire Council and is only accessible to authorised Council officers or law enforcement agencies for lawful purposes related to the prevention or detection of criminal offences and operational matters. Members of the public do not have a right to access CCTV footage. Requests for footage must be made by law enforcement agencies in accordance with Council’s access to information process. Council does not provide footage to individuals or organisations other than law enforcement agencies.

The operation of these cameras is governed by Tweed Shire Council’s CCTV in Public Places Policy, which ensures compliance with all relevant legislation, including the Privacy and Personal Information Protection Act 1998 (NSW), the Government Information (Public Access) Act 2009, and the Workplace Surveillance Act 2005.

If you have any questions or concerns regarding the CCTV cameras or would like further information about the policy, please contact Tweed Shire Council at tsc@tweed.nsw.gov.au.

The CCTV in Public Places Policy was adopted by Council in February 2021.

Please contact us if you have any questions. To request access to any personal information that we hold see access to information.
